"in recognition of the
extraordinary service they rendered by their researches into the influence of magnetism
upon radiation phenomena"
-----------------------------------------------
Zeeman independently examined the spectrum of a sodium flame situated in a strong magnetic
field using a concave Rowland grating field ten feet in radius, and found that the lines
were indeed split by the field. The magnitude of the Zeeman effect proved that the
electron was the radiator, not the atom, as Larmor had assumed.
